悪質な検索エンジンスパムを行っているWebページにリンクを張る行為は、時として不利益を被ることがあります。

米Googleの従業員であるGoogleGuyによると、リンクを張る際には相手先サイトのHTMLソースを調査してスパムを行っていないかどうかを事前に確認すべきだとのことです。つまりバッドネイバーフッド（悪しき隣人）に対してリンクを張った場合、その（リンクを張った）サイトもペナルティが科される場合があります。これは「あなたが誰からリンクを張られるかをコントロールできないが、あなたが誰に対してリンクを張るかはコントロールすることが出来る」ことに起因します。検索の品質を落とすようなスパムサイトに対してリンクを張らないように、注意しなければいけません。
