The only problem I have with this kind of analysis is the effect of what is called in my real life 'confounders'.Correlations and relationships are one thing, but they are easily confounded by a variable that is not included.
A classic eg is the relationship between the amount of ice cream consumed at a shop at a certain beach and the number of drownings at that beach - you can actually draw a striaght line graph comparing these two .... the relationship is almost perfect. BUT, only a fool would assume that the ice cream consumption is a factor in causing the drownings. The relationship between the two is confounded by temperature. Warm weather causes an increase in both and should have been 'controlled' for in the analysis.
The analysis above did not control for a lot of other factors that could have confounded the ranking - ie they ranked where they did becasue of reasons not due to the keyword density etc. The analysis is based on the assumption that there is a relationship between keyword density and rankings - there may be, but there also may not be (eg anchor text from external links may be the reason why they rank where they do and nothing to do with differences in keywords density) - so the analysis is not necessarily meaningless, but needs to be interpreted with caution if all potential confounders are not controlled for.
